Hello every1!!
I wanna connect an old Mac laptop to the Internet.
My laptop has a phone port on the back.
I have a PC that is connected to a router then to a DSL modem and also has a dial-up modem.
Can I connect the 2 computers with a phone cable to have Internet on my laptop??
Thanx all!! ;)PS: My laptop is a PowerBook 520c.

Ok!! I got the phone (RJ-11) cable connected on the back of the 2 computers.
What now??
Thanx!! ;)El-Trucha

those things are so old... may not be internet capable... at least graphical.
with system 7... you will need MAC PPP. and a very old version of netscape.. like netscape 2.x or 3.x.prolly not worth it. lol
A+ Certified
MCSE soon

Well...that machine HAD Internet...it has an America Online icon on the desktop, and also it has a Word document
called "timeline" that a kid wrote that says many things he liked, and one of those was 2 get on the Internet.
But I'll get that Mac PPP and Netscape.
Hmm...now I was wondering if my DSL/Router are just for Windows...how do I do 2 know??
Also, my internal dial-up modem on the PC has 2 RJ-11 connections. Which one is it??
Thanx!! ;)El-Trucha

One connecter's for the phone, and ones for the wall..there's usually little (very faint) markings above the jacks to indicate which...
On the laptop if you have open transport you should already have all you need to get a modem running..i think in the TCP-IP control panel it has a setting 'connect via PPP' if you have a modem connected..
your ISP should have an old sheet on how to configure for their service, as you'd have to have their DNS numbers anyways to fill in the control panels .
You do have an ethernet port as well, though, it's one of those AAUI ones (has a little mark like so <-> above it), and if you get an adapter (AAUI to RJ45- which looks like a fat phone plug) you can plug into the router..i'm not sure if a 68040 will work OK with adsl, though..i never could get it to..works fine with cable internet though..since you've already got the PC online via dsl you'd just go into TCP-IP and select 'connect via ethernet"..and in configure "using DHCP server"..might work..
Thing is ADSL requires more processorpower than cable ethernet...And, naw, dsl isn't just windows, but if you've got a modem may as well use it if you have any problem with the DSL...
If you want to open any web pages at all :) dont think about using anything earlier than netscape 3..anyways 3 is still surprisingly compatible with a lot of sites (the pages simply won't be very pretty sometimes) and make sure you turn *off* javascript before the first time you connect online with it - important- (open a local html page on your harddrive or something)..
If you don't do this netscape 3 will crash *before you get a chance to turn JS off in preferences, and before you get to select a different start page* (after you install NS3 it goes automatically to netscape's homepage, and the JS crashes it, every time!..in fact , most Java Script causes a 'sorry, Netscape has unexpectedly quit' message in NS 3x).
Other than that, as long as you allocate enough memory for it , netscape 3 is very fast and stable on old 68k's and Mac Laptops..(suggest uing VM though, and if you've only got the minimum 4 megs ram even virtual memory isn't enough to run any netscape)

Ohh...ok!! I think I got 12 MB RAM on there...
Is there a Netscape version that comes in floppys and is downloadable?? kuz the Netscape installer is like 2 MB and it doesn't fit on a floppy!! :(I'll get the AAUI-RJ45 adapter then!! :D
But...how do I configure the DHCP??
Thanx!! ;)El-Trucha

Well, 'configure' is the name of the option..you just select the option 'using dhcp server' from the drop down menu..it is configured..( dont forget the first option 'connect via ethernet')
If that option doesn't appear, make sure you've got the'apple built-in ethernet' extension AND the 'ethernet (built-in)' extension..sometimes you need both..they're in the system folder , in extensions, on your OS8 disk , if you have one, or you can do a custonm install off a system 7.5.3 disk, or disk image, and get them there...you may already have them in youre extensions folder...
If youve checked to make sure that AAUI port is really there (as a very few books didn't have it, but i don't know why) ..then set up your tcp-ip and plug in, but, as i said before, ADSL *might* work OK as theres no reason it shouldn't, but even so i had problems getting a signal thru..the fact that you've already got a live adsl connection going to the PC could make the difference though...it might require more processer power than plain cable ethernet, i don't know...
When you're configuring the TCP-IP, incidentally, you might want to make sure the setting 'load only when needed ' is selected, seeing as it's a powerbook and might not be hooked up to the net all the time..
The reason for this is that on desktops, normally,if this option is unchecked, the tcp-ip loads at boot and is active the entire time the computer is on..this takes a bit more RAM, but mainly, if you're *not* connected to the net at boot, it can take several minutes for the desktop to appear while the computer tries to negotiate a valid DHCP licence (it only takes seconds if youre connected, but if you're not it can't find anything, which kinda stalls your boot fo a long time..it's not imoportant as to why, really, except that if you select 'load only as needed' then this only happens when you actually go online, saving memory and gaining a much faster boot up time.
To do this..after starting up the tcp-ip control panel, go top the edit menu and select 'user mode' , select 'advanced' , and then the 'options' button on the bottom right..put a check mark in the 'load only when needed' option, close, and save..
I think this option is actually meant for modem users to keep the modem from trying to connect right at boot (which has happened to me before..very annoying!)

It occured to me, if you are missing some essential ethernet files or have other probs, lemme know here and ill let you know how to get the OS7.5.3 disk image off of apple's site and install the files you need...
Five bucks, eh...68040's are pretty decent macs, especially for powerbooks..i like 'em..good deal, if i do say..

I don't have any of those extensions...:(
I don't have a OS8 disk...:(
I downloaded once 2 disks saying they were System 7.5.3, but then I found this page:http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_7.5_Version_7.5.3/
Is that OS 7.5.3??
I already downloaded all the 19 disks...
I was afraid that I didn't had all the space needed 2 have all those images on my Mac's hard drive, but then I saw an option about virtual RAM...it was eating up like 35 MB!! and I had only 8 MB left...so I decreased the virtual RAM number to 15, and now I have 28 MB to make all the disk images!! :D (it says I need all of them together to expand them with Disk Copy...)
So, is that page all the OS 7.5.3 disks??
Thanx!! ;)El-Trucha

Hmm...is there a physical store where I can buy an AAUI-RJ45 adapter??
They don't sell it on Apple stores...:(
Just on eBay...but I can't buy online!! :'(
Does any1 know??
Thanx!! ;)El-Trucha
