keeps saying my firmware is outdated
and i need to updated,but i cant find any
updates for a os 8.6 on a G3 POWER PC

put the 0s 9 cd on your imac and then
choose start up disk from the control
panels and choose the cd. then start the
installation from the cd.

Go to Apple's site and search for firmware updates. Also, the 9.x installer CDs have firmware updaters on them.
