HP690C to iMac - chooser problem

I have a new iMacDV and tried to connect my old hp printer via a USB-parallel lead. The driver software comes on CD with the lead but although it seems to install well (the computer recognises the presence of the lead) the selected printer in the chooser does not remain selected once I close the chooser and I cannot print anything as there is 'no valid printer'.
