i'm trying to decide between the HP812C and th Epson740 or 740i.
does anyone out there have any helpful info to help me decide?thank

Although probably not too helpful, I personally stay away from Epson products... I have had too much trouble with them in the past to recommend any to anyone. HP pretty much sets the standards that other inkjets should live up to... and work hard (Have had experience with 500, 6xx, 7xx, and 8xx series, none of which I have had problems with).

I have been using Epson Printers since 1982. We have a dot matrix that is still working (hooked up to an old C64) when its on. So when it came to decide on a printer for our Mac 5 years ago, we went with the first Epson Stylus that hit the market, and it was probably the best buy (although back then it was $700 cdn.). But being a graphic designer, I print out more than the average home use Printer, and mainly at 720 dpi. As with every printer, the print head is rated (ie: 10, 000 sheets at 5%). Well after burning out the print head last year, it would of cost more to repair the old Stylus than to replace (as printer are now around $200 - $300 cdn.). So I did a little shopping and went for the Epson Stylus 740. FANTASTIC!!!! Printing at 1440 dpi on the photo quality paper (gloss) is 99% photo quality. Where I work, we even print out preliminary Proofs for customers on an Epson 1520 (using color Sync).
As for other printers, (HP, Cannon, etc.) they do a good job, but for quality and colour accuracy, I would always choos an Epson.
P.S. Also went with an Epson Photo PC 2 years ago.
P.P.S. As a suggestion, look at the reviews of printers in some Mac Magazines, and Epson usually gets to ratings.

I just recieved a hand-me-down Mac Centris 650, and need a color printer. Is the Epson 740 the only one out there that will work? I need a serial port to plug into. I dont have a parellel or USB in this machine. Any responses would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

if you're running mac os then forget HP - if you are running linux then forget HP
maybe someone could post if the epson range is more mac friendly?
