I have alot of experience on this subject with PCs but absolutely none with Macs. Can you please walk me through setting up my iBook to connect to a small home hub and then to a DSL modem? I am also hooking up a PC to the same hub & DSL modem, but do not know how to properly configure the Mac. Thank you in advance!

Very similar to how you'd configure the PC...

Make sure NAT and DHCP are on on your router.

Open the TCP/IP control panel on the Mac and set it to DHCP, with the router address in the proper field, and everything else should take care of itself.

Thanks for the reply, but I do not have a "router" with an IP address. All I have is the DSL modem (a Westell Wirespeed) and a simple 5-port hub (with one uplink port). I am trying to connect a PC and a Mac to the hub which is uplinked to the DSL modem. There is no IP to set as the "router address" or gateway.

Thanks again,...

Get a router. Using a hub is a Really Bad Way(tm) to do this, if for no other reason than it leaves any computers connected to it exposed to any kind of hacking attack some random kiddie can think up.

Get a router - decent 10/100 four-port ones are about US$70-100 - and revel in the joys of its built-in firewall. It'll take care of everything for you :)

If you prefer not to do mail order, even your local Best Buy or Circuit City (maybe even Office Max, Office Depot, and Staples now) has a good selection, though you'll get a better price (even after shipping) online.
