Don't you hate when someone who doesn't know
what they're talking about says something can't be done or shouldn't even be tried? That's just the kind of thinking that really stimulates innovation (sarcasm).

I read a message a while ago on here about how dmg files cant be opened on anything but OSX and even if you could, it wouldn't have any purpose. Well, as I'm sure some of you know, there are many applications and files that will run on earlier operating systems but have been packaged in dmg files. One example would be Vectorworks, a professional CAD drafting program, but any file can be dmg'd and may still be useful on OS 9.

If you are on OS9.1 or higher and have Roxio Toast 5.1 and up, you have an option.

Open Toast and select 'Disk image' as the type of operation you wish to complete.

Drop the dmg file onto the Toast window.

If it takes it, you should be able to click mount to view and use its contents.

If Toast says it is an unrecognizable file, just tell it you want to use the file anyway, and accept its default settings in the next box.

Then, from the 'File' menu, select 'Save as disk image'
and save the file.

Double click the file you just created, and presto! It
should now mount giving you access to all those
'unavailable' files. By the way, you no longer need to have Toast open.

So, I guess if you are on OS 9 and need to read a dmg file, you aren't in such a 'pickle' after all. ;)

Don't you hate when someone who
knows a lot and does not profess to know
everything, yet offers advice to those in
need everyday, gets a needless 'dig' from
someone who happens to know
something?

The original question was whether the files could be opened on OS 9 without having to buy a $90 piece of third-party software.

To which the answer is still no, unless someone who obviously thinks he's more of a guru than myself can prove me wrong.

Have a vectorworks .dmg file that will not open. Is
this even possible? If so how?

Disk Copy won't work to open DMG files on OS 9,
and neither will anything else.

DMG files work for me on OS9 when I
burn them to cd and then create a disk
image from the cd

Roxio Toast will mount a .dmg file as a
disk image without having to burn a CD
first.

...both of which require either 1) a CD burner or 2)
a $99 software package.

And for what? To open up a file that only works in
Mac OS X anyway!

======================================

So it was first said that nothing in OS9 would be
able to open the files; then, even if you could, the
files wouldn't work anyway. - Both points are in
error.

All I did was give a more complete answer for the
Toast solution for anyone who really needs all the
steps, and I never submit to the thought that there
is no way to accomplish something a person with
initiative puts his or her mind to.
