I've been emailed a .wps file (I think this is Microsoft Works
Word Processor). I don't have Microsoft Word on my Mac, and
have tried and failed to open the .wps file in NeoOffice,
TextEdit and AppleWorks.Can anyone please suggest a free program I could use to
open .wps files?

Have you tried Open Office?
You can find it here:
http://www.openoffice.org/index.html
It's a freeware MS Office-type prog that's quite good. It runs under X11 in the Mac world which you can install from your Tiger disks. There are instructions on the site.Mac OS X (X11)
* Power Mac G3 400Mhz or higher
* Mac OS X 10.3.x (10.3.5 recommended), Mac OS X 10.4.x
* 256Mbytes RAM
* 350Mbytes available disk space
* X11 required. Available for OS X 10.3 on Apple.com here and for OS X 10.4 on the OS X install disc. The instructions for Tiger users are here-->(http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301229)
* 800 x 600 or higher resolution with 16.7 Million colours

Also, there is an Intel specific version of Open Office, but not a Universal binary as of yet. The Intel version can be found here:

.wps is for a Word Perfect file. Make a backup copy and try changing the extension to .doc or .txt and you might be able to open and read it.
