how to decompress avi

i have a power mac g3 with mac os 8.5 and i try to play avi video but a message tell me that the decompresser could not be found what can i do?

Use Quicktime 4 to open it, if you don't have the 'decompressor' to QT4 for AVI then use the file 'Quicktime Updater' in the folder 'Quicktime' to get that. If you of any reason can't use QT4 then use Microsoft Mediaplayer (for mac) to open it. You can get it at http://www.microsoft.com/mac/ and then search on 'mediaplayer'.

i have a dell 98. i try to play avi's and message pops up saying this file could not be decompressed. please check file. i dont know what to do, i have tryed everything. i have the newest version ofquicktime, and windows media player.

I have a mac system 8.6. I have the latest realplayer,quicktime,Media player,I look out for updates. Yet I can not play AVI divx files. A my exstentions are loaded. why will these type of files not play.

Summary: just got my first mac after many years of using pc's....trying to find out how to make sure the modem is working and is installed correctly....not use to the format of a mac yet and found what is like...
