OS: Microsoft Windows XP Prof
CPU/Ram: P4 2.4 Ghz / 512Mb RAM
Comment:

Dear Fellas,
I am currently running on a pentium 4 2.4 ghz with 512 mb ram and planning to get a new mac.Well frankly my question points to those guys who are using or have used Intel PC's with windows and Mac's!To be clear here are some of the questions-:

1)I saw apples site and was pretty shocked to see that their macs run an a g4 processor and maximum of only 800 Mhz and whereas i am running a 2.4 Ghz processor, thus will there be a difference in computing?

2)How is the MAC OS in comparison with windows operating systems?

3)Are there tons of applications made for mac like windows has.My primary importance are some softwares like norton anti-virus's,word processor and some programming language and flash 5 etc developing tools and some networking stuff and tons of games(thats optional!)

4)Is it widely accepted? For example the university which i am going to had adviced me to buy a laptop and i wanted to know wether mac can handle documents or stuff given by them!

5)Is there a good support for MAC?

6)Can i upgrade my mac especially i would be going for ibook or powerbooks!

7)Are there any bugs in it or is it clean like linux?

regards,
nsrd

I was a PC user for years but then I had to
work with a Mac for professional
reason's. At first I didn't like the Mac but
the more i worked on my powerbook the
more i became fond of it. Now i couldn't
live without it anymore. Never, never,
never make me change to PC anymore.
About you're question on MHZ's 800 vs
2,4. Don't look at the Mhz my dear friend.
There's a lot more that makes your comp
going fast. Motorola processors such as
the G4 are made in a totally different way
then Intels, Athlons, Pentiums,... What
about exchanging stuff between mac and
pc? Everything can be exchanged. MS
Office also exists in mac version. So
documents made on your mac can easily
be exchanged with an office user on PC.
Even flashplayer 5, ...
It takes a while to find alternatives for pc
programs on the mac. But once you've
been settled in. You'll be so happy to have
made the step to MAC.

Have a gander at just about any site listed on macsurfer.com for lots of (not always objective) articles about Macs vs. PCs.

Here's a fiendly site with a lot of Mac enthusiats. They'll be glad to direct you to whatever comparison info you need.
http://www.techsurvivors.net

As mentioned above, mhz comparisons between Mac and PC are like comparing rpm's in an engine. 5000 rpm under a 'Vett hood's gonna get you a bit more speed than 5000 rpm under a Chevette hood.

For awhile now Macs have been able to run virtually any Win program. The new Mac Jaguar OS is running circles around Windows.

The ? was will Mac run like Win. Actually most of what you use in Win came from Mac. Once they found a way around the patent issues MS released Windows.
Virtual PC is a Win emulation program that runs within Mac OS. Because of the system tiering, it tends to run somewhat slower
The site I mentioned earlier, TechSurvivors, is really an excellent resourse for Mac info.

G4 performs RISC processing better.

Graphic software runs a lot better on the
G4.

Are you a Photoshop Phreak like me? if
so then get a G4.

But i'm waiting for the G5 processor to
come out. Which is said to be 5 times
faster then the G4.

Of course OS X is EZ to use and stable.
Duh!

If you believe that hertz are true speed,
then you've fallen victim to the Hertz hype
being done by PC manufactuers
everywhere who advertise their machines
as "P4 1.6 ghz or 2.8 ghz"

You cant even hear yourself talk when
running one of those machines. Not to
mention they need an overwhelming
amount of fans to cool it down whie
guzzling up more energy.

First let me say I have a Powerbook G4 Titanium.
Feels good just to say it. Sweet machine.

For a Mhz Comparison. The G4 with comparable
memory/hard drive and running similar
applications (Office 97 on PC and Office 98 on
Mac).
The PC was a 800Mhz and the MAC was 500
Mhz.
Near equal in all tests.
But the G4 has the velocity engine that was not
even used in these test as the software was not
written to support the full capabilities at the time.
Now we have OSX 10.2 and Office X. How is it
possible that I cannot crash the machine and it is
so much faster now than when I bought it? The
velocity engine is supported in OS X and Office X.
Heck, I thought the fan in my powerbook had
gone out as it never came on. When I run Virtual
PC(windows on a MAC) it uses the full capabilites
of the G4 and the velocity engine and then, the
fan comes on. Check out Macaddict.com and
macworld.com for comparisons of PC/MAC. But if
you are wanting a cheap computer, by a Compaq.
If you want a great machine that works, even
better than the Sony, buy a MAC. It will pay for
itself in the long haul and you will be one of us
who is proud not to say I have a computer but I
HAVE A MAC!
