Just wondering if anyone knows how to get a MAC onto my LAN. All my PC's are running Windows 2000. Any help is greatly appreciated! :0)

If you're running OS 9 or earlier, purchase Dave
for your Mac. It will let you connect to File servers
and shared printers on your PC network. PCs will
be able to connect to your Mac as well.

If you're running OS X, you already have built-in
support for connecting to PCs. When you're in the
Finder, click on the Go Menu and select "Connect
to Server". You specify the machine you wish to
log in to by SMB://COMPUTERNAME/
SHARENAME

Example for my network:
smb://DELL2000/MP3S

You can click the Add to Favorites button at the
bottom of the connect to server window to make it
easier to connect to in the future.

This is a one way street though for Mac OS X up
to version 10.1.5. You can access your PC
network from the Mac, but the PCs cannot access
your Mac. If you need to access your Mac,
including its' files and printers hooked up to it, you
will need Dave for OS X.

With OS 10.2, Apple has included the ability for
Windows users to access shared folders on your
Mac.

To sum up, if you have OS 9, get Dave. If you
have OS X, you have everything you need if you
just need to access File Shares on the PCs. If you
need your PCs to access your Mac running OS X,
get Dave or update to OS X 10.2.

James is correct, but before you go straight to Dave, you can also try enabling appletalk on your win2000 machines, and then using computer management to share folders for windows and mac.

Doing it this way will not allow you much ease of use -- see James above for easy -- but it should get you what you want at no additional cost.

PC MACLAN I think is alot better then Dave. As far as the techs are concerned this is their choice of software and now that I use it, I also suggest it over Dave.
