What operating system are you using?

Do you have a cable modem already with internet service
provider and active account?

If using Mac OS X just plug in the ethernet cable, click on the
Safari logo in the dock and you're connected.

I have two computers- a HP vs17 and a Compaq MV540, the HP has a wirless modem while the Compaq has the modem connected to the phone line. And I actually think that my operating system is verizon(says verizon on the modem although my e-mail and everything is Fairpoint-so confusing!) now when you say ethernet cable what exactly is that? Sorry Im not much of a computer wiz! lol
Thanks,

Fairpoint and Verizon are both part of the same company, at
a guess I'd say that is your ISP (Internet Service Provider).

Your operating system is installed on your computer, it will
say what it is on your Compaq & HP as the computers load
up, it will likely be something like Windows XP or Windows
Vista.

To find out what operating system your Mac uses click on
the apple logo in the top left corner of the screen and click
on About This Mac, it will then bring up a little window which
will say in big letters something like this:

Mac OS X

And then below that in little letters:

Version 10.5.7

Those numbers will tell you what operating system you have.
