Ok, I've messed up my Mac real good this time. I'm using a 266mhz G3 Beige MiniTower running OS 8.6. Somehow, I managed to select a disc image as my start up disk. Now I can't start up my computer. When I do, I get a light gray screen with the message "unknown word_" in the upper left hand corner. Starting up from my original OS 8.5 CD while holding down "c" or even "command-option-shift-delete" does not work. The system won't even start off of a flopyy.

Any suggestions as to how I can go about fixing this? Any help would be much appreciated!

Hello there..i had a similar ordeal with my
power mac running 9.1. This method is
kinda crude..but works...maybe pickle can
think of a more gracefull solution.
Just disconnect your harddrive...put in
your cd and start your comp. Itll be forced
to boot from cd.. if it doesnt automatically
try C or comman option shift del...once
you boot from cd...set the startup disk as
the cdrom and then shutdown. reconnect
your disk and restart by holding C. Should
be ok...i think! :-). Be carefull while
handling the bus.

Hmm...still get the same screen?..even
when you diconnect the hard disk?. Have
you tried zapping the pram and then
doing the same thing?. command option
RP while booting. That might help. Is your
OS 8.5 CD a bootable cd?

Yup, I'm pretty sure the CD is bootable. On the disc, it says hold down C to boot from this disc.

I will give zapping the PRAM a try. What is RP?

Thanks

zapping the pram is done by holding
Command + option + R + P keys down at
the time of booting. keep it held untill your
Mac does its usual sound 3-4 times...and
then release it and try booting from cd...

Get into Open Firmware by holding cmd-opt-o-f on startup.

Type the following exactly as shown:

reset-nvram [press return]
reset-all [press return, Mac will restart]

Immediately hit the CD eject button, put in the system CD, and hold the C key.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Ok, so far, I've followed Pickle's advice to
go into the firmware. From there, if I type
in "BYE", I can start up my computer. But
if I just restart, I continue to get that
"unkown word_" message. I've already
set my start up disk back to my hard drive.
But I'm still experiencing the same
problem. Anyone have any idea how I can
fix this?

I tried running disk repair, but that says
that everything is fine.

Did you type in exactly what Pickle told you to type. If so, then where did you get this "BYE" from. Sounds to me like you got a hold of an .smi image because you don't have to use disk copy to open them as you do a .Img or.dmg.. .smi mount themselves and you didn't post anything that relates to "Mounting Manually" something before this happened. You follow?

let me throw this one out to Pickle or maybe even Andy. Is there anyway to track down this persons prob by using the .smi Disk image in a Search. I mean, if this guy can now get into his comp. buy typing in "BYE", why not search for all .smi disk images? Seems logical. But can it be done in that manner?

BTW, were you working with photos or something in that catagory when this all happened?

Yeah, searching for .smi would find any self-mounting images, but I think that's a bit of a red herring, because even those have to be mounted manually. As long as Disk Copy is installed, self-mounting and normal disk images will behave the same way.

I don't think this guy followed my instructions, though.

For some reason, I wasn't able to reset
the PRAM from Open Firmware. I
probably did something wrong. But
holding down command-option-R-P while
start-up seemed to do the trick.

Everything's back to normal. Thanks
everyone for the help.
