Subject: Help! my iMac automatically connects to the Net |
Comment: Help. My iMac automatically connects to the internet. I don't have anything in the startup folder. When I disconnect in Remote Access, it waits 20 seconds, then it reconnects. How can I stop this from happening? I feel someone is connected to my computer soon after it connects. I don't know how but this is a suspicion. Is there any place to look to see if the computer is programmed to connect and for what reason. It randomly started doing this. Much help would be greatly appreciated. I have no idea why this is happ

Reply: (edit)My guess is you've got TCP/IP set to maintain a permanent connection. Open the TCP/IP control panel; from the Edit menu, choose "User Mode" and set it to advanced; click "Options," and check the box for "Load only when needed."

Reply: (edit)have you installed Macster? It seems to default to a setting that starts your internet connection whenever you boot.

Reply: (edit)Man I sure appreciate your advice. I checked the TCP/IP and it was already set to "only when needed". I haven't installed Macster but do have other similar FTP apps installed. I'm wondering if any of these would do that. Where can I find out what is causing the system to connect to the internet? Something is triggering it and it must be logged somewhere on my computer. Any suggestions? Thanks much for the responses, Gary and

Reply: (edit)sounds like it may be a virus..try downloading norton AV from the symantec.com homepage..its a free trial version and will have up to date AV defs. you may want to do this even if you are running mcafee as norton catches many more viruses

Reply: (edit)Are you running OS9? I am just beginning to play with this version so this is just a guess. Go to control Panels and look at the settings for Automatic System update. See if the computer is trying to update the OS at startup. KJ

Reply: (edit)One other possibility I have encountered that sounds similar to your problem may be an instant messenger program. I downloaded the AOL instant messenger for Mac and it would connect on startup everytime. Uninstalling it ended the problem as I couldn't find any settings I could change to make it stop doing that. If you recently installed AOL instant messanger or ICQ, you might want to see if that is the problem. DW
