Is it possible to create a .gz file from a .zip archive? What application(s) for Mac are built for working with .gz files (not just unpacking, but compressing as well)? Gzip is a Unix compress utility, so maybe this can be done easily from OSX? (P.S. I don't know anything about .gz files, really.)

Just use the command line and enter
gzip [path to file]
If you'd prefer a GUI utility, I'm thinking your best bet is the shareware version of Stuffit.

For OS 9, of course, neither of the above is going to be a particularly useful solution; go to macupdate.com or versiontracker.com and search for "gzip" and you'll find plenty of OS 9 stuff.

Thank you. So, it is possible to do then - convert a .zip to a .gz directly? Or do you have to unzip the .zip and then compress the results as .gz?

You can compress *any* file into a .gz file, but that doesn't mean it's going to save much space ;)

You can not directly convert .gz files to zip files. Most of the time .gz files are also .tar.gz files. You will need to unarchive and compress them using StuffIt expander then recompress them in .zip for using ZipIt or DropZip.
