If you have a static IP, it should show up in your TCP/IP control panel. If your ISP assigns dynamically (DHCP), your address may change each time you log on. Some ISPs will give you a static address if you ask them *very* nicely. If your access is through a company LAN, ask the system administrator for help.

This will work for any individual session --

If not already installed, install NCSA Telnet or BetterTelnet (both available on the web). Once installed and connected to the Internet, go to the Network menu and choose the Show Network Numbers... command. That will bring up a dialog box with your IP address. As the previous posting stated though, if you do not have a static IP address, that number will change every session.

Here are the easiest ways to find out your IP address without installing any additional programs. Assuming that you are running Windows 98 click start|run and in the box then type in COMMAND and click OK This will bring up the DOS window and a prompt. At the DOS prompt type IPCONFIG and hit return. This will bring up a listing of your IP address and some other information. To exit this window type EXIT at the prompt.

Another way to do so is to type in WINIPCFG at the RUN prompt in Windows. This is can be a little more complex in the event that you may have a network card or additional components that require IPs. However, choose the appropriate adapter (which in a dial-up situation is the PPP adapter) and it will give you the IP address.

Keep in mind that you can only determine your IP address while you are online and many internet service providers may assign you a different IP everytime you log in. So do not assume that if you get online, get the IP address, then log off, call your friend and tell her the address and then log back on you will be assigned the same address because you may not get the same one. In short, stay online, get the IP and call her from an additional phone line or mobile phone. Hope this helps.

To the previous poster (Andrew):

FYI, this person is using a Mac, not a Win98 PC. So you're advice won't help her. Although it's good advice for the PC...
