Comment:

My 8-year-old son inserted what he said was a smaller-than-normal-sized CD (obviously some rogue format) into the CD-ROM drive of our iMac OS9. A bunch of icons appeared on the screen, which I deleted. But no CD icon appeared. We tried inserting another disk, but it was summarily ejected. Tried also restarting, but no go. There's no pin hole to manually eject, and there's no carrier to pop in and out. Any suggestions before I seek out a repair specialist?

The smaller than normal cd is half the size of a cd. it has a compacit of around 340 Mb. How to eject it, well im a pc user but i do know this, if you had a cd icon, just drag it to the trash. No Pin Hole??????? Its a good thing i did not buy a i mac. I always have problems with cd-rom drives. Try going to the special menu, is there a Eject Disk or Eject CD????? Like i said, i only have pc's here no macs. I only Emulate a mac.

Haven't seen an iMac without the pin hole.
It's very small. If it's a latter iMac model,
make sure it's powered on when using
the pin hole.

You might try powering off the unit and then tilting it forward to see if the disc will just pop out. Beyond that power it up and hold down the mouse button as soon as it bongs. This forces a CD eject on boot. If this still doesn't work you will definitely have to seek professional help. I've dealt with these junky little CD drives and typically you'll tear it up trying to remove a stuck disk. Looks like you'll be paying Steve Jobs a couple hundred dollars. Next time buy a PC, CD drives are much better and only about $40.

Avoid the Windows OS, unless you're into tweaking,
tinkering, troubleshooting, games, or you need
total compatibility with other PC's. If you want to
get your work done as quickly and easily as
possible stick with the Mac OS, so you can move
onto something else. Like having a life away from
your computer (referring to the PC users who tolled
you to buy a PCÑwhy are they surfing Mac forums???)
Keep the faith, don't be brainwashed by PC geeks.

please,please stop blaming the OS....
Its the programmers of the software your loading that is causing the problems!! More than likely your so called OS problems are caused by poorly written utility software you installed in your PC! Mac or win!

Oh dear oh dear. Another unfortunate Mac user. I am forced to use a Mac at work and have been severly dissapointed. The particular model I'm using is an iMac and...hold on....where the hell is the damn eject button for the CD??? Oh wait, if the Mac crashes and the CD gets stuck, I simply have to stick a paper clip in the pin hole. Heck Apple, why stop there, why not make a mouse with a little pin hole instead of a button, and how about a keyboard without keys, just little holes. That would be thinking different!

And what's the deal with not being able to minimize the windows. You can roll them up, but they just get in the way. And why do I have to press control to get the context menu? Apple, what are you thinking? Oh, sorry, you're thinking "different". Well stop it and think "Windows".

Sorry, but my personal experience with Macs has convinced me to stick to PC's. They may have their own set of problems, but you're better off getting a PC for so many reasons.

The only thing I like about Macs is that they're beautiful. Very gorgoues indeed. But when it's crashed for the millionth time then I don't care if it looks like Cindy Crawford. It's still rubbish. Actually, I do like the look of OSX. Once it actually has popular software like Photoshop that runs on it, I might be converted. But probably not...

OK - I'm a PC guy as well, but work with Macs (when I can't avoid it >;-). Something that's escaped my attention until only recently is that the top-right button on the new keyboards bear an eject symbol, which *may* be a way of getting rid of it when the icon doesn't pop up (or certainly works for me in normal use)..

Sounds like the previous poster should learn a little about the Mac interface before dimissing as rubbish. There are things I don't like about mac (the whole 'put away' thing and the way macs use the desktop is a bit of an odd way of thinking, not to mention the constant barrage of modal dialogs..), but there are some reasonable ways of dealing with managing windows (tabbing them to the side of the screen is good). Anyway, not to want to turn this thread into a "Mac vs PC" free-for-all, I leave it there.. :)

How about getting a CD-ROM disk out of an G4 Cube? I can't find a pin hole.
To make matters worse, the disk in question is blank and there's no icon.
Help, please.
