I've never owned a mac before. I remember them from college in the music department (1993-1996ish) but was wondering. Is it possible to do with macs what you do with pc's, that is can I buy a cheapo and upgrade it myself or if I buy a machine I can afford, is it's obsolescence terminal. I just want to get my feet wet and don't have 2 grand to spend. I guess my core question is what should i get for my first mac?

The beautiful thing is that you DO NOT have to spend 2-grand to get a brand new Mac. For half that much (probably less) you can get yourself a nicely-equipped iMAC or an iBOOK. Once you discover the wonders of OS X, you'll never you go back... : )

The older version...not the flat panel...but the "all-in-one" w/CRT display & 40GB drive is still available too. Good price. There's the eMAC as well. Once you start getting into the the Power Mac G4, then you're getting into $$$.
In the notebooks, the iBOOK rocks! Check out the goods at Apple's site...c'mon...you know you want to.

Check eBAY for used goods. I'm sure some other users can recommend cheapo machines that can be upgraded.

Have fun

If you want to get a G3 PowerMac (Blue and White with, I say, at least 256MB of RAM) you'll get a capable system that you can open up (incredibly easily) and poke around with, and you'll be able to run OS X and get used to it.
