Ok, I have a few options here, and I need to know what you guys think. I have an option of getting a TiBook G4 @ 400 MHz, 512 MB RAM, 20 GB HD, and DVDROM drive for $1300. Then there is the iBook. 600 MHz G3, 256 MB of RAM, 20 GB HD, and DVDRW. I can get both for about the same price. Now, will the G4 be faster than the G3? I will not do much video/music editing, but I do use Photoshop every now and then. Thanks for any replies and information!

Get the TiBook. It'll run OS X far better and will probably last longer in terms of upgrade life.

Yes, and the existing 512 mb ram will
serve you better especially with Pshop if
you crank large files.
and: DVDRW's are in thier infancy right
now as far as consumer use goes, so I
wouldn't fret about loss of that kind of
functionality right now.
To be honest, when I bought my G4/450 I
would have liked to get a plain CD drive
and save a few bucks. My DVDROM is
kinda slow to get going when you insert a
CD.

I have to disagree. I recently purchased
an iBook with a 40 GB hard drive
(upgrade) and 512 MB RAM (upgrade as
well) and have never been happier. The
cost of upgrading the RAM is nominal and
the Mac performs much better. I also use
Photoshop a lot both editing pictures and
freelancing art designs and have never
once had a crash or experienced slow file
manipulation. Usually working with
Photoshop I like to make back up files as
well, which is why having the integrated
combo drive is key. I actually got the
CDRW/DVD and produce up to 25 full 700
MB CDs a day flawlessly.

I say go with the iBook and upgrade. I
installed the RAM myself - it was simple
and I'm not what you would call a
computer technician.

Happy shopping!

Thank you for the replies. I am definitely going to consider both the newer iBook and the older TiBook. If the TiBook is faster, in general, than it will be a good $1300 worth spent.

Go to www.macworld.com or find a copy
of the PowerBook issue at your local
library. They did a great "what PowerBook
is right for me?" article a month or two
back. Might have been the April issue,
might have been March. One of the last
three, that's for sure. Reading that ought
to give you some more food for thought.

Ok, thanks a lot. I definitely want to get a Mac, but not sure if I should go for the new iMac, a Powerbook or iBook. I've been leaning towards the Powerbook though. This is going to be a desktop replacement. Now, one stupid question. Will this, or how fast will it be than my PIII 500 mhz Desktop? Desktop has 128 Mb of RAM.

Any of them will be noticeably faster than your 500MHz P3.

If you're looking for a complete desktop replacement, the TiBook is probably the better deal.

Ok, thanks Pickle. I think what I am scared of is the 100 mhz difference, but I read up on benchmarks; and Quake3 is 1 fps faster, so that calms me back down again. And a $1000 difference! I think I can live with the loss of 100 mhz. ;) Thanks all!
