I have a Graphite G4/450 tower that I got last August, upgrading from and Powermac 7300. I was dumbfounded and disappointed to find that Apple has decided, after all these years, to stop including a Sound In port on the computer. I do recording with my computer, and basically, I can't record with a computer with no line/mic in jack. I'm wondering, does anyone know what Apple's thinking on this is? Any windows PC you get these days will have a soundcard with a mic input. Macs used to be superior on this factor, but no more.
Anyway, so much for my rant. My problem/question is, can I buy an Apple sound card from a beige G4 tower? they have sound cards with mic jacks. Will one of those work if I put it in a pci slot on my gray G4? I tried one of those sound cards that is made by a company that is really windows oriented. their software just wouldn't work with my system (9.1). I got an iMic by Griffin Tech., but I can't get it to work and this really sucks. I just want a computer with a mic jack. this is why I also bought a windows pc, but it makes me mad that when I want to record, I have to use windows.

I have a macally ivoice which is pretty
much the same thing, and they are plug
and play!,the only thing is.....to record,you
need 3rd party software,if you have toast
than you can use cd spin doctor it'll
reconize it with no problems!,they are a
few other apps that they work, but I don't
know what they are????(apple and
macally)both gave me the run around
about software!(neither really support 3rd
party audio recording software)all they
told me was software problems is not
thier issue, unless it's got to do with
drivers or hardware confilcts ,and that if
the output works..the input should!,just
make sure you have it selected it your
sound in/out options.

I never heard of a Beige G4.
Just spend the 40 clams and get one of
those iMic gizmos if your mac lacks a
mic-in. I use a great FREEWARE app
called SoundRecorder on my G4/450 with
the ONBOARD mic-in port (It's not a card)
and it works great.

The personality cards from the beige G3s are NOT PCI cards. DO NOT PUT ONE OF THESE IN A PCI SLOT; you will likely burn out the card and the motherboard.
You can get something like the SoundBlaster Live card, however, if you need a line-in jack. Apple used to (maybe still does) sell them as a BTO option, so check around.
BTW, it *does* have a sound input; it's just digital.
p

Usually an optical digital input(toslink)
can support an anolog miniplug also!,the
only thing is,sync recording/auto track
marks usually don't work to well!

What type of input is the line in...miniplug/
toslink or coaxial or does it feed off the
same digital link as a cd/dvd
drive(internal link)
