Short explanation: pick either G5 or amd/intel.
Long explanation: The G4 has been an antiquated processor since 2 years ago. It has hit a clock speed barrier, and will never go faster. Also, it runs on a 167MHz bus which is extremely slow by todays comparisons (the last time computers ran 167MHz buses was about 2 years ago...very old technology). So why does Apple still sell this? One very good reason...They CAN'T sell anything else in their small form factor/laptops! This is because the G5 is just SO fast that it overheats the system. However, Apple has made strides with this in the design of the iMac G5, which is very small, but still houses a G5. If all the roumors are true, Apple will release a G5 laptop very soon, probably at their next trade show. I'd definately wait for the PowerBook G5...especially since it is this close to being released. Or if you want something now, you could just get an Intel/AMD laptop (as you stated in your first post). It could save you around $1K if you buy correctly. BUT you will have to deal with viruses/spyware if you neglect or don't install security software. If you go that route, just make sure you get a system based on Pentium M with 533MHz bus - those are by far the best in my opinion.

well, in my opinion, being a mac FrEak (12 days remaining & already pre-ordered), i would wait for the G5 powerbooks i think they will be released shortly after tiger, within two weeks or so. the way apple works i think they will do a huge line addition because the have big releases almost quarterly. i believe the next release will consist of OSX Tiger, the G5 powerbook, & a new addition to the G5 powermac line. so yea, i would definately wait! good luck with your decision!

thanx for the responses, all i really wanted to know is what i should recomend laptop wise to my friends. thanx
