Hello! I have been attempting to initialize
a DVD-R. The computer freezes during the
initializing process. It can happen at any
time during the process - sometimes right at
the start sometimes when almost near
completion. I have not been able to
initialize without a freeze. I would greatly
appreciate any suggestions. Thank you! :)

What are you trying to initialise with?

Is it the built-in DVD recorder or a third-party one?

I assume the built-in DVD recorder. When I
insert the DVD a window opens that reads
"This disk is unreadable by this computer.
Do you want to initialize?" and then it gives
options: Mac OS Standard, Mac OS Extended,
and Universal Disk Format. I tried to
initialize as Mac OS Standard but kept
getting a "disk is locked" message. When I
choose Mac OS Extended it starts the process
but the computer always freezes.

Thank you!

Hey, you don't happen to be running 9.2.1, do you? If so, see if updating to 9.2.2 and running Software Update a couple times helps matters. There have been a couple updates to the Disc Burner software since 9.2.1 came out.

whew...okay...i updated to 9.2.2 (yes, i was
@ 9.2.1)...i updated everything that showed
up on the Software Update list! :)

After updating, i tried to initialize the
DVD. It got down to ~400,000K and the
numbers disappeared (the progress bar stayed
up so i could see that the disk was still
being initialized). When the bar was full, a
blank window came up and the pointer/curser
disappeared! (no wait, i'm the curser in this
scenario! i meant the cursor! :)

i could not do anything so i shut the
computer down...after restarting i inserted
the disk but the same window came up "The
disk in unreadable by this computer. Do you
want to initialize the disk."

Hit the Extensions Manager control panel and you'll see what I mean.

Yeah, what is going on with that picture up there? It looks like a guy lost on his way to the cover of Twoism. A man in a helmet with a map meandering. It relates to computing. (?)

...that did not help at all...in fact after i
changed the set i was not able to go online at all!

here's a thought...are there dvd's that are
pre-formatted/initialized??? :)

re: pic - the figure just under the words
"computing.net" - there is a line of "tracks"
(footprints) and a figure of some sort.
Looks 2 me like a man in a space suit
"discoing" with another "person".

The computing.net logo. I assumed that's what picture Suzanne meant.

Whether or not you can go online shouldn't have anything to do with the DVD issue. Was it able to format successfully when you booted with that slimmer extensions set?

The logo - yeah, I never pay attention to stuff on top of the page, since that's where ads usually appear. I'm not sure *what* that guy is doing.

Also, see if the DVD-R reader reports on macintouch.com have any mention of this issue.

i did not mean that the online thing and the
dvd thing were connected....i meant that
after i changed the set, nothing changed with
the dvd situation (still could not initialize
without a freeze)...the only thing that DID
change was that i was no longer able to
access the internet.

thanks for the suggestion about the reader
reports.

Ah, gotcha. Let me know if the Macintouch reports help out - they were just updated yesterday, which I noticed about 10 minutes after I posted here.
