I just switched to OSX for all of my audio apps. My
mac freezes, at random times, bringing down a dark
curtain and it gives me an alert in different
languages to restart my computer. This only
happens when an audio app is running. Even with
itunes. Someone told me it had to do with my RAM.
That if I had all the same kind of RAM installed the
problem should go away. Thoughts?

Pierpaolo,
That's a very good possibility. The problem
definately sounds hardware related, and there are
many people who 'think' that if they pop in just any
old RAM chip into a G4 - it'll be cool - yet it's not as
simple as that. You know when you first start up your Mac -
there's this long delay (even in OS 9)? That's the
CPU checking the RAM - and the latest Apple
Macs are very picky about what kind of RAM is
inside them - or more to the point - they "prefer"
one sort over another. So yeah - if you have a couple of el-cheapo
PC100 DIMMs in there, it would be worthwhile
testing it by taking out the RAM you upgraded with
leaving only the original base amount of RAM that
Apple put into it at time of purchase and see if it
happens again.I tried it with my G4 867 MHz - as I'd come across
two extra 512 MB DIMMs and they were PC133,
yet not supplied by an Apple dealer - and the
result was that the G4 just would not start up
period - grey screen. Took them out - everything
back to normal again. Thus - the G4's "are" really picky.
Then again - it might have something to do with
what kind of equipment you've got attached to
your G4.If it was me - I would firstly disconnect all
peripheral devices and run a two day test. If it
began to black curtain me - I'd remove the third
party RAM and test again. If that made no
difference - I'd swap keyboard and mouse for
another keyboard and mouse - (this one sounds
like a rather odd thing to do yet i can assure you
that there is a reason behind swapping the I/Os) -
and finally - if nothing made a scrap of difference -
I would take it into an Apple Service Centre and
have the trained techs attempt to nut it out.See how you go via logical elimination - and drop
us a line to tell us how you went Pierpaolo.cheers
