G3 Memory Problems w/Graphic Programs

At work I got a G3 about 3 months ago. It's pretty well tweeked and everything seemed to be running smoothly except lately. Quark refuses to run with any other program. So I have to quit Quark to get any new art work for my ads...use Photoshop 4.0 or Illustrator 8...then close those programs and reopen Quark. Thought it was just our system acting up but one of our outsourced ad designers also bought a G3 2 weeks ago. She is having the exact problems. Infact, our Apple clone prior with next to nothing on it...would run all these programs no problem. So something is not set right. I've tried adjusting indivdual program memory on Quark, Illustrator & Photoshop...didn't work. Virtual Memory is on.
