I've got a iMac with OS 8.6. Is there a way to know the firmware version because I want to update it. I can't find the latest compatible firmware version available at apple.com. I've got the first version of iMac...bought in 1999 I think

Booting with cmd-opt-O-F held down will probably tell you, or Apple System Profiler should be able to as well.
