I just got a Lacie cd-rw, and my mac could not detect it. After talking with Lacie, they tell me I need to upgrade my Firewire connection to 2.3.3, and I downloaded from the Apple site. It appears that the "installation was successful", but I'm not an expert at installing software. However, the driver still would not work. Again after talking with Lacie, they tell me that the firewire upgrade is not being accepted by my Mac, because I have never updated since my original purchase., and that I need to first update my firmware?, before I can update my Firewire, before I can install my driver! HELP! It shouldn't be this hard. I have an excellent digital darkroom workflow, and I don't want to mess it up. All my OTHER peripherals on all Firewire or USB connections work perfectly. Please help. Thanks, tward

If there are any firmware updates for your Mac, you *NEED* to install them. Apple has a list of them on their support site.
If that doesn't fix the problem, and I rather doubt it will, LaCie probably needs to accept the fact that you have a defective device on your hands.
There's an outside chance Mac OS 9 is required for that device to work, however. If you can test it on an OS 9 box, that'd be a good idea.

P - thanks, searching for any firmware updates first. As I search, when I bought my G4, it was the very first one (no cd-rw - only reader), People said it was really a G3 with some cosmetic changes (It is a "G4" though). It's gray-sivler with blue. Do you know exactly which version of frrmware upgrade I should be looking for? Unforuntaley I don't know anyone with os 9, but when I bought it, Lacie claimed it would work with my os 8.6. Thanks again, tward

Yeah, there's definitely a firmware update for that machine. Apple has a page that lists all the firmware updaters at www.info.apple.com.
