i just installed mac os x and when i boot it up i can't see my firewire hard drive. I can go into disk utility and see it in there, but when i go to mount it, it wont. I can boot back up into os 9 and see it fine. What's going on here?

Who is the maker of the Firewire Drive. Most likely you need a driver for OS X

the maker of the drive is acom data. They have a driver on their web site but it is a usb 2.0 driver. I never had to install a driver for it on os 9. If i unplug the drive and plug it back in (usb or firewire) it will say that the device contains no volumes readable by os x. It asks me to initialize, but I know not to do that. In os 9 the format of the disk shows up as mac os extended... same as my other two discs. I don't get it.

Your right. That is very confusing. By all standards, you have it set up correct.
OS Extended should show up on OS X. The USB 2.0 shouldn't make a difference because it is Firewire.
Have you tried calling Apple. Do you still have tech support?
