I have an 4-yr old G3 running 8.6 from which I want to transfer files to a new IBook (or my G4 at work). The G3 is to be given to a nephew so I want to clean it up and transfer some files to the new computer.
The G3 does not have PCI Card for Firewire, so that method does not work.
I also have tried connecting the two via Ethernet, also unsuccessfully.
My next try is via USB cable. I have seen very different prices for USB (A-male on both ends) cables - from a low of $5-$6 to over $50 for one identified for "data transfer." Is there really a difference - as in the cheaper ones will not work or is it a matter of speed?
I would greatly appreciate any advice. I have been trying to do this for over a week.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

The ethernet will work but you need to plug the G3
into a Hub or Switch and then the G4 into the Hub or
Switch. You can NOT plug them directly from one
computer to another. To do that you need a
crossover cable.

Once you do this then open file sharing on the G3
and share the whole HD.

Set your name and password and login from your G4.

Using ethernet works great and is the simplest and
cheapest, but you do have to use a "crossover" cable
if you don't have a hub to connect them both to. If
you don't have or need a hub, get a crossover cable.
That would be my first choice.
