okay, here's the deal...we are using a G4 to
run Pro Tools. we are running out of space
on the hard drive. we need to transfer some
sessions over to another drive. what i need
to know is this: are there different types
of hard drives?? for example - are there
drives whose only purpose is for storage (by
that i mean, you will not be able to open and
use files that are stored on this drive
without first copying them back to the "main"
hard drive)???? are there external drives
that will allow you to utilize the files on
the drive without copying them back to the
main hard drive?? can anyone recommend a
FireWire drive for ProTools sessions to be
saved and used?...or please stop me from
wasting any more of my precious time and tell
me whether or not this is even possible!Thank you! Suzanne

I think it's time you had a chat with ProTools tech support and asked them why the FireWire drive you have now isn't working.
p

pickle...
i have been talking with them...i tried to
initialize/format the FireWire drive with the
software that came with the drive as u
suggested...however, there is no such item!
(Combo ION by Iogear)...there is NO software
to format the drive with!!! Iogear said that
u can only format if u are running OS X...i
am at 9.2.2. (which does not make any sense
to me...if the system requirements are OS 8.6
to 9.x and OS X why, oh why, would i not be
able to format @ 9.2.2!!!)...Pro Tools says the drive has to be
formatted...which i am unable to do...i need
to return this drive and find a new one...but
i don't know which one to choose!!! PT will
not give a recommendation.....i need a
FireWire drive WITH software to format it and
an Oxford 911 chip...i also need some
understanding about hard drives (see first
post) are there drives that are simply for
storage...blah, blah, blahs

You could get third-party formatting software like Intech SpeedTools.
Does your FireWire drive have an Oxford911 chipset now? If not, return it and get a better drive. You'll be glad you did.
p

thanks for all the advice....but i still need
to know about hard drives...are there some
that are just for storage? are they all just
for storage? is it possible for me to use a
drive other than the system drive to save
sessions, open them and make changes, save
the changes...all without transferring the
files back to the system drive and then
moving them back to the external after saving
the changes. can anyone tell me if this is
possible and if so, what type of hard drive
do i look for???S

They're all for storage. You can't write-block a hard drive *some* of the time without doing it *all* of the time without going to a whole lot of trouble.
What I can't figure out is why ProTools wants all your editing sessions to be on the boot volume.
p

Okay...they are all for storage...does that
mean that I will not be able to open ANY file
I save there? and actually "use" it (like
with with a floppy...I don't have to move a
word document back to the hard drive to use
it)...I purchased an external hard drive and
the manufacturer said "its only for storage,
you have to copy the file to the system hard
drive to actually "use" it...are all external
drives like this?????please end this nightmare!!!!
S
p.s. pickle i will be listing you on the
credits of our first CD!!! (well, actually
we have 2 indie-gospel CD's out so it will
have to be our third!) :)

Hard disks are read AND write media unless you go to extreme lengths to make then read-only. So any files you save to the drive can be modified, deleted, saved again, moved around, or whatever. And you can add more files to it whenever you want. Hard disks and floppies are identical in that respect.
I don't know what the hell that manufacturer was trying to tell you, but he's wrong.
E-mail me privately, too, BTW.
