executable files for macs?

I just got a Mac, so I'm new to all this. I have OS X, and I know that Mac's don't read executable files...and I'm somewhat aware of emulators. But is there any way for macs to read executable files without an emulator? And is the standard application usually .hqx?

both wrong
mac osx is nothing but a mac gui running on bsd (mac osx is based on darwin wich is a bsd port (bsd is a unix port much like linux)) try loading wine
wine allows you to install and run windows software nativly on unix based machines and works within bsd
perople keep thinking of mac osx in terms of mac when they should be thinking unix now

Mac OS X, as much as Apple would like you to think so, isn't exactly compatible with most BSD binaries. Just because something runs on BSD does NOT mean it will run on OS X; in fact, just about anything that has any sort of GUI whatsoever will NOT.
