Comment: I am running a G4 400Mhz with an ethernet card on the motherboard. I am connected to the web using a cable modem and a linksys router. My machine is able to get a tcp/ip number directly from the cable modem using the DHCP mode. However, when I try to do that from the router I keep getting a number that does not change and it is not related to the router tcp/ip number. On the same network I have a clone G3 that works all the time without any problem when using the router. Sometime if I force the rigth tcp/ip number by manual set and then going to the DHCP mode I can get it to work; howevern it is not a repeatable fix. Zapping the PRAM does not do any good. I had this problem since I got the router (several months) sometime it goes away for long periods of time. Once I get the right tcp/ip number I do not have any connection issue. The line is extremely stable. Any comments or ideas?

Reply: (edit)I'd make sure the router is properly configured. It sounds like something is corrupted in the communication between the router and the G4. Resetting the router and trashing the TCP/IP Preferences file on the G4 are the first two things I'd try. p

Reply: (edit)Good idea! I rebuilt the desktop several times but never trashed the preferences. It looks like you nailed it down. Thanks. C
