Wel, here's my problem. I want to set up a
nice Mac to Mac Ethernet connection.I have one iMac with the normal RJ-45
(Phone-type) connection and two
potential Macs with the AAUI connection
(A PowerMac 6100 and a DuoDock II).I'm not going to use the Dock as the
second Mac, but the 6100. But on both
computers, when I attempt to set Ethernet
in the AppleTalk control panel, it gives me
this same message:"An error occurred attempting to use
Ethernet built-in.Make sure your network connections are
correct."Just so you know, I DO have an AAUI to
RJ-45 adapter, and that is not the
problem. The iMac (OS 9.0.4) allows me to set
AppleTalk to Ethernet with no problems.
The Dock (System 7.5.3) and 6100 (OS
8.6) give me the above message. And
THAT's when the computers aren't even
connected yet.Seing as the iMac works without being
connected, I'd think the 6100 and Dock
would too. (In fact, come to think of it. The
same happens when they ARE
connected). The only other explanation I
can think of is the AAUI port is damaged.
But the coincidence of both of them being
at the same time?

Are you using the hub? if you are trying to hook up just two mac without the hub then you have to use crossed over ethernet cable.

You may not have all the software needed for ethernet loaded. Try installing the communications package from your system CD (custom install, then pick ONLY what you want). Don't forget to turn file sharing (control panel) ON.
BTW; I would NOT be running 8.6 on a 6100. I have one as well (networked with G4 and network printer), and trust me, you should be running 8.1, and only installing what you NEED at that.

FYI
Although you are right when you state that the Imac will not give you a "error" Im afraid that the 6100 WILL results in an Appletalk error when your Mac is not hooked up via ethernet. In other words your 6100 needs to be hooked up first to a active hub and another node(computer) for there to be a valid connection. Also in my experience and if I remember correctly some adapters will not work with a xover cable.
So what ya gotta do is hook up your imac and 6100 first. Then on the imac set up all your ethernet settings when your done with that then do the same with your 6100 and your problem will be solved.
I am confident to say that your AAUI port is not damaged.
