erratic mouse

Comment:
I have an old imac running 10.2 and have never had any problems with it. Suddenly, the mouse automatically selects everything it moves over so windows open all over and I cannot perform any tasks whatsoever ( I am sending this on a pc). The mouse is a laser mouse that I've been using for a couple of years without trouble. I haven't tried plugging in a regular mouse because I don't have one and would have to buy one just to try. Anyone have any idea of that would work?

Assuming it's a dual boot machine, try booting into OS 9 and see if the mouse is working then. Do you know if the keyboard is working in OS X? You can tell if your drive icon is showing in the Finder and you press any key, the drive icon will be selected. In either case and everything is OK in 9, I would suspect that something got buggered with the part of X that loads either the mouse device or the usb port "device". You could then just try the software restore disk that came with your Mac, and if everything is fine, I would try updating your system by downloading the update and applying it manually rather than using Software Update panel.
