Hello!
I'm not used to Mac and I got an old PowerPC 6200 with an external modem (Elsa microlink 56k) without any installation software (and I can't find one on the web). The modem is not detected by the computer, although it is put on the modem port (the printer - on the priter port - works well).
I have no "modem control pannel" as you can find with Windows setting.
For information: I disabled AppleTalk.
Can anyone help me ? Thanks!

You have to remove the internal modem for the x200s to see an external modem on the modem port. More information at lowendmac.com.

Thank you for your quick answer!
But...
I think that my old 6200 has no internal modem to remove.
Can the problem result from a false string init for elsa 56k?
And what do I need to connect? AppleTalk? a new version of FreePPP?
Is it impostant to put the parameters in MacTCP?
I know that's a lot of question but it's a bit of jugle for me and that would be very kind if you help me a little bit.
Thanks a lot.
Fabrice

Read the articles on Low End Mac.
It's almost impossible that your 6200 didn't ship with an internal modem and VERY unlikely that anyone has removed it since then.
Once you've figured out for *sure* if there's a modem in there or not and you've read the articles about the x200s on Low End Mac, get back to us.

Hi!
Now, I'm sure that there's no internal modem to remove.
So, I installed FreePPP (2.6.2). When it is trying to connect, I can see that my 6200 is communicating with the Elsa microlink 56k modem (the red diods of my modem are lighting then) but a get then an error message saying "the modem is not responding... a YES was expected".
Now, I'm quite sure that problem comes from the modem and/or the string init (I couldn't find anything on the web that talks about Elsa with MAC).
Do you agree with that point of view?
Thanks for your answer ;o)

my USR does the same thing the send/recive lights light up and flash but AOL can't get past the first dial-up step. It is a 9-pin serial connector and i have a pc to mac adaptor which has 8-pin on it could this be why the modem dosen't work?
