DVDs won't play on my ibook anymore

I am no longer able to play DVDs on my computer. I was running OSX10.2 for a long time and never updated, then recently i bought 10.4.8, now i think all applications are current, but, I still can't play DVDs, Could it be the DVD drive? what else can i try to make it work?
