Subject: DVD-R disc will not format? Locked? |
Comment: I am trying to test burn a dvd on i-dvd for the first time on a new g-4 mac with superdrive, but when I put in the blank dvd-r that came with the system, it asks me if I want to initialize it as the ProDos format. When I say yes, it says the disc is locked. Why is it locked? I have never used it before. What should I do? I am using OS 9.2.

Reply: (edit)You are using the correct drive to try and burn the disk? That's assuming you have two or more drives. Is the disk mounting on the desktop? If so, it means the disk has allready had something written on it - the disk probably is not an intended DVD-R if it has been written on, either that or someone has been using what they should not of been. If this is not your answer, I hope you find it, but might I suggest you use something other than a DVD-R in the writer to test it, as you won't ever be able to use it again once you have written to it.

Reply: (edit)Not sure when you're putting the disc in, but try getting iDVD all ready to burn and then click "Burn" or whatever. It should ask you to put in a blank piece of media. Put the disk in *then* instead of trying to put it in beforehand. That'll probably work; I have the same problem with blank CDs when I haven't written anything to them yet. p

Reply: (edit)Are you putting the disc in immediately after clicking "burn" (or whatever the button is called)? p

Reply: (edit)Okay, I'm having the same problem. I want to burn a DATA DVD, so I can't click 'burn.' When I insert it, it says 'disk is locked' and forces me to eject. help.

Reply: (edit)I had the same problem. Kept getting the "locked" message. Then I used Toast 5 to burn my DVD-R and everything worked great

Reply: (edit)I was having similar problems and read the messages above. I was using DVD Studio Pro and got the locked disk message when I tried to initialize. However, when I went through the DVD Studio Pro menus first and waited until it asked me to insert a DVD disk, everything was fine. I've also discovered in the past that I can avoid the locked disk message by using OS X instead of 9.
