I'm considering buying a new PowerMac, but cannot decide if I should spend the extra 200 bucks to ugrade to the superdrive, or take the default dvd,cd-rw and buy a DVD-r/-rw or +r/+rw . My concern is that the superdrive seems to be able to only burn DVD-R, not -RW,+R or +RW. Any thoughts?

Do you want to be able to write video DVDs?
That's the only good reason (well, OK, huge backups, but it's pretty slow for that) to get a SuperDrive, IMO. If you're more concerned about data or only care about watching movies, get the stock combo drive and consider an external DVD writer when the format wars play out.
Summary: hi, i got a quicksilver G4 with CD-RW and 250zip drive. i want to get myself a DVD burner. what company should i look for that will work with the mac, is Sony ok since my CD-RW is sony. can i install ...
Summary: You actually need to buy a DVD burner as the format of a DVD is seven times as dense as that of a regular CD. Software will come with the DVD burner but it will set you back well over $2k....
