DSL and Printer on same Ethernet port?

I have a G4, a HP 1200M laser printer, and a DSL modem. The printer works off of Apple Talk, and uses an old peripheral 8 cable, so I had to buy an Asante TALK box to convert the perpheral 8 cable to an Ethernet signal so that I could plug it in. My DSL modem uses Ethernet too, of course, and I have to switch them out all the time when I want to use the one that's not plugged in. Do I have to spend the money to get a router if I want them both to be on-line? Router's are like $80 or something... Such a stupid problem! Is there a cheaper solution, or do I just have to deal with it?

A router is probably the best solution for a
number of reasons:

1) If you get any other computers, it will
enable them to be online as well.
2) It acts as a 4- (or more) port
hub/switch, so it will speed things up on
your network relative to LocalTalk or an
Ethernet hub.

You'll be happy with it, trust me.

All you need is a cheap Ethernet hub.

A hub will work just fine in this situation
on a Mac, as long as you have the
software from your DSL provider for
connecting to PPPoE. I have a simple hub
and have connected my dsl modem, two
macs, and a localtalk printer to it. Make
sure the cable from the hub to the dsl
modem is in the uplink slot and your
proprietary connection software should
work through it. If you get a router, you'll
give it the settings and it makes the
connection through the modem. With a
hub, the dsl will not be on if your
computer is turned off.
