Drivers for DVD-RAM GF-1000?

Comment:
After a recent system meltdown, I can't get the Hitachi DVD-RAM GF-1000 to work. It recognizes as a CD-ROM (basic Apple driver) but won't read CDs so a new driver can't be installed from the system disk. Anyone have any clues on how to get it working again?

Is the Hitachi unit one that shipped with the Mac?
How is it connected?
What Mac is it?
What OS?
My guess is the Apple driver doesn't properly support it; information on third-party or hacked drivers can be found here:

More Details:
*It's OS 9.0 running on a G-4 tower. *The DVD-RAM came installed when it was purchased. *It's the master device on an IDE bus. *I pulled out the drive and put it in a Win XP box. It was able to read cds and dvds, so I'm reasonably sure the drive is ok.
Hitachi's web site is no help (all 10 different versions... extremely difficult to navigate).

OK, so it's a stock drive. That's a good thing.
