Double-click PDF, won't open Reader

Hello,
Double-clicking a PDF will cause Reader to begin to open and then Reader suddenly closes with no errors and returns to the desktop. I'm sure these files are alright because I tried the files right off the Acrobat CD. I have tried rebuilding the desktop, removing all Acrobat references and reinstalling, and working in the File Exchange control panel. Any other ideas?? I'm guessing here but it seems that the PDF knows to open Reader but some kind of conflict occurs when opening Reader. The Mac menu bar changes to "Acrobat Reader" but doesn't have a version number after it and then quickly closes. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

try opening acrobat reader first, find out which version 3,4,5,6... , try opening file from menu, also check properties of *.pdf file, if newer than reader or has security settings, may not open...:)
