I've got an iMac running 9.2.2, and a Performa running 8.1, I've got the two connected to a hub, so the network can be expanded, only, I've tried everything and neither computers see each other. So I was wondering, do i need AppleShare IP on the iMac? So that other computers (when i add more) on the network can see it, and each other?
Only, from what I gathered before, I could simply connect them to a hub and have each one's file sharing settings correctly setup, and make sure appletalk settings are correct, and then you can use the chooser on each one to see the other computers. Only this doesn't work as I've already mentioned; hence why I'm wondering if I need appleshare ip (I'm assuming that asip is network server software).

You only need to have Appletalk turned on, on both machine, ethernet selected on both machines, and enable file sharing on one of those machines. You should be able to see the oter machine in the chooser under appleshare.

I appreciate the help, but it still doesn't work. That's why I don't understand why it isn't working. AppleTalk's on and Ethernet is selected on both machines, the owner, password and machine name is setup on both machines, users & groups is setup on both machines, the hard disc is shared properly on both machines, and it doesn't matter if both computer have file sharing on, or only one does, but whatever way round I do it, when I click the appleshare icon in the chooser, there is some network activity indicated on the hub then the whole thing goes dead and nothing comes up in the server list. The network browser on the iMac won't work either. It freezes when it's opened and can only be force quit.
I want to cry.

Not really, I'm trying to get this network going because I plan to add more computers to it in the future.

run a cross-over cable, see if the macs will see each other first. Than attempt it through the hub, you might find that the problem lies not with the macs.

Yea, hardware trouble. Bugger. OK, thanks, I'll get a crossover cable and if they work then, which I've got a sneaking feeling the b---tards will, that means this godforsaken hub is up the duff. Thanks again.

I have never been here before, but I may be able to help, this may sound really obvious, but have you specified an IP address for each machine? A friend of mine who was linking up several macs just couldn't get it to work, until they realised that none of the macs had been given IP addresses, upon doing this it all worked fine.
Using the ethernet connection over the hub isn't like using localtalk which just "works" you will NEED an IP address
