I'm not a whiz at this, but I'll try to describe
the problem as fully as possible.I'm running an iMac running OS 9.2 with
Verizon DSL networked through an Airport
software base station. Recently I
purchased a new domain, but the domain
name stopped working (The attempt to
load "_" failed, etc.). I can access the site
through the IP address, but apparently
there's a problem with my DNS server. It
won't connect the domain name with the
IP. It's been like this for several days now,
and I can't seem to find a solution for it
anyplace. All I'm told is that it's a problem
with my local host's DNS server.TCP/IP is set on Airport/Using DHCP
Server. The other computer on this
connection can't connect to the site,
either, but I've been able to connect to the
domain through a variety of other local
ISP's, and all the visitors I've spoken to
have been able to access the site.Is this something I should call Verizon
about (I'm reluctant to do this because
they put me through such a rigamarole
whenever I call .. plus they don't give tech
support to people who have networked
their connections), something I should
just sit on and wait, or is there something
I can actively fix myself to correct this
problem? This hasn't occurred with any other sites,
just my personal domain. I have checked
with iCab, Netscape, and IE, to no avail.
I've emptied the caches in IE to no avail.
I've replaced the TCP/IP preferences to no
avail.Any help would be much appreciated.

Sounds like your local DNS has some broke-ass DNS set up. Tell them to fix it :) Oh, and make doubly sure the DNS settings for your domain are correct. I was able to get to it fine but you never know.

The Verizon guy says he doesn't know a
thing about it .... I'm guessing I called the
wrong place. ... I don't know *who* my
DNS server is, or where to find them, or
anything. How do I find out? And where
do I actually *check* my DNS settings?

DNS servers are usually run by your hosting company, ie the company providing your web space. You bought a domain, but have you asked your hosting supplier to put the domain into their DNS servers in the first place? If not, then the domain wont go to your hosted webspace.
heres a link to info on your domains DNS servers:
http://network-tools.com/default.asp?prog=dnsrec&Netnic=whois.arin.net&host=callanerial.net

His *domain* has working DNS or the rest of us wouldn't be able to see it.
His local ISP, the one that he can't use to see his site, has broken DNS, because he - and only he - can't see his own site.

I'm having a similar problem. I also have Verizon
DSL on an ibook. I'm trying to use the web
sharing feature. Bought a domain and tried to link
to the web server (Apache). First try dynamic
DNS software (www.dyndns.org and
www.zoneedit.com or get you the right stuff). That
software will update your IP address automatically
if it changes (and it does if your using Verizon).
Verizon sucks and has never helped me (there
mac people aren't mac people). My site only
works with 127.0.0.1 from local. Any ideas?
