school is phasing out support for appletalk.
i disable appletalk. the tcp/ip cp is on dhcp setting.
subsequently opening the tcp cp shows router and
mask entries missing while ip is retained. after a bit
the ip changes to 169.xxx.xxx. network is then
inaccessible. however with appletalk still disabled, i
can manually input info into tcp/ip cp and get it to
workquestion is, must appletalk be enabled in order for
dhcp on the tcp/ip cp to work? why? i vaguely
remember it said that some subroutines for tcp/ip is
coded into the appletalk cp. sounds weird.help
ps: should virtual memory be enabled?

In answer to your last question, yes, VM should normally be enabled unless you're using a program that specifically tells you not to use it (ViaVoice for example).
As for your main question, DHCP should not be affected at all by Appletalk. Is it a specific computer that's having this problem or is it all the Macs? I can't believe they're phasing out Appletalk without upgrading to OSX - you do realise that means you'll have to manually type in the IP of every share you want to access. Admittedly after you've done it once you can create desktop aliases, but what about printing?? I don't think OS9 supports non-appletalk printing at all!

all computers. yes i realize that that shares will be
difficult to mount. however, there is an app...desktop
printer utility, that sets up printers thru ip. comes
with the installation diskhere is a typical scenario...
