Comment:

I have a trusty Powermac 4400 w/a g3
upgrade card that I use as a 2nd
workstation. It will not power up today. I'm
assuming it's the battery since the
time/date has been wacky lately.

Does anyone still sell batteries for this
machine? Is it something I can easily
replace myself? (I have done a lot of
upgrades and repairs over the years but
have never had to replace a battery)

Yeh u can get a PRAM battery for it. They
are not to expensive and are easy to
replace. how is your computer not booting
is it just the monitor or the whole
computer?

The CPU itself It is simply DEAD.
No power. NOTHING happens when I try
to power it up. No lights, no sounds,
nothing. Monitor seems to be ok.

That's probably *not* a PRAM battery fault, but hey, it's worth a shot.

I'm guessing PSU.

I agree with the Pickle on this one. Even with a
dead PRAM batery the machine will still boot. The
date and time will be wrong, but it will still boot.

Be sure to do the obvious, check all of the power
cords to be sure they are all the way in.

You may be better off buying a complete machine
from e-bay and just doing a hardware swap. It will
be less expensive and much easier than swaping
the PSU from that machine.

It's the pram battery for sure. Just replace it and the machine will boot up just fine.

The 4400 was Apple's only computer designed around a modified Tanzania motherboard. The 4400 and other Tanzania-based clones will not boot with a dead PRAM battery. Try replacing the battery before attempting to replace the power supply on a "dead" 4400.

Unfortunately, Dan Knight doesn't bother doing checks on the "facts" he quotes.
