I see too many mixed messages about this issue. What happens when the small lithium battery dies in a berryblue iMAC from 1997 (being as specific as i can)? One day the screen went mad flashing and condensing and then everything went out... except the little lights, light the on off switch can still be used, but it doesnt turn it on or off.. it just lights. Can this possibly be caused by the battery? Or would this be the analoge board dying, or the cpu or something?

more likely the flyback transformer is dead. you can verify ti by hooking up a mac multi sync monitor to the db-16 jack at the back of the chassis, you will have to remove the bottom cover.
