At startup screen was completely dark, then after 2 restarts it became visible but very dark. I recalibrated the screen to the highest settings and put a yellow background on, but fear that any work in photoshop will be of no avail. There was an earlier problem of the imac not being able to wake up from sleep, but that seems to be gone. Don't know if it was related.

Is it still under warranty? Sounds like a mechanical problem. Call the store where you bought it and yell at them. Seriously.

Apparently this is due to a bad analogue board. Someone said that zapping the PRAMM might help.
