Subject: Crashed - no start up at all!OS: OS9CPU/Ram: G4 |
Comment: I have a completely crashed system that won’t even begin start up. There was an extensions conflict after I attempted to install Iomega HotBurn driver. I booted in safe mode and deleted all files with HotBurn in the name – as recommended in Iomega’s support pages, then shut down. Now my G4 won’t even begin to start up. Is there any way of resolving this problem without re-installing OS. I don’t have many of the software CD’s and there is also a large amount of image editing on my desktop.

Reply: (edit)There is no "safe mode" It sounds like your running OS 9.2.2 or previous, correct? If you turn on your machine and all you get is a blinking folder with a question mark, then you probably either trashed the system or finder file, or one of it's resources, or enablers. If you had'nt, then you would atleast get a smiley face when you turn your machine on. More discripton is needed.

Reply: (edit)try booting from os9 cd,disconnect iomega drives, check extensions manager for conflicts and missing files needed, replace files only if so, try using disk aid to check for errors as well,:)

Reply: (edit)A technician looked at my problem. My system is OS 9.04 - software not compatible with 9.04 though it said it was compatible with OS9 up, causing an extensions corruption. I now have a flashing question mark/smiley face on start-up. Any advice on how to proceed to get into my system? I want to install a compatible version of Toast instead of the Iomega Solutions software that caused the problems. I have a large amount of data on my desktop. If it is necessary to re-install my OS will I lose this data?
