The Ethernet cable has to be specific. There are 3 typoes:
- Hub to mac
- mac to mac
- mac to wall

You need a mac-to-mac ethernet cable is the same as pc-to-pc cable. About $6.00 at any computer store. Once you get it just plug the macs and hit the file sharing panel and share both computers. Great wa y of playing games or fast file sharing.
Second choice is a SMC 4 port switch one of the cheapest. I've got one of those, no complains so far

The first thing you need to do is not put twelve - yes, 12 - exclamation points in your subject.

I'd get more specific than the last post. The Computer-to-Computer cable is called a 'crossover cable.' That should do the trick. If you want to share a broadband connection, that's a whole other story. That said, make sure that the cable is Cat5 or Cat5e. That way it will support the full speeds of your ethernet. It's doubtful that you'll need 100Mbs ... but hey ...

sorry for all the exclamation marks.
I just put them there to attract people
faster.

What i had in mind is mac-to-mac
connection. as far as the cable goes, i'll
read off what it says. And in file sharing,
what steps do i take.

The cable says,
"E108971 HCM CATEGORY 5 4PR/24
AWG (UL) TYPE CMP/MPP - VERIFIED
(UL) CAT 5 - C(UL) TYPE FT5 - ETL
VERIFIED 10 EIA/TIA 568A CAT 5 - 6/98
(911559) - 169456

Unless it says crossover, it isn't a crossover cable.

Go buy a crossover cable.

Ask the Help how to share files.

Your cable is definitely Cat5. Lucky for you, I'm listening to good progressive rock (Rush, Dream Theater, et cetera,) and felt like looking up your cable. Unless the website I went to is wrong, you have a simple patch cable and not a crossover cable. While it is possible to make the patch cable a crossover, your best bet would be to just go out and buy a cheap Cat5 (or 5e) crossover, unless you're planning on doing broadband routing, or eventually using >2 computers on the network.

Oh, and the vast majority of questions on here get answered. Hence, not the need for !!!!s

There's nothing you can do to that cable short of cutting off one of the ends and re-wiring it (with a new RJ-45 plug) to be a crossover cable, and I'm going to assume that you don't have an RJ-45 stripper/crimper and an extra plug. Just twiddle your thumbs 'till the local PC shop opens tomorrow and buy a crossover cable. If it doesn't say "crossover" on it (or the clerk/sales dude says "crossover??"), don't buy it!

Also, Rush and DT aren't bad, but I don't like much prog that's younger than myself, mainly preferring Yes, Genesis (Gabriel-era), ELP and King Crimson.

Based on your other post, I'm gonna recommend you get a router and a second Ethernet patch cable (like what you have already). That will allow you to hook up both Macs to a single Internet connection (DSL or cable) and will also allow them to talk to each other.

Hi!

Just have a look at the cable: Hold the both ends next to each other and have a closer look to the eight colored strands inside. A patch cable has the same sequence of that strands a crossover not (cause one is crossed for bidirectional purpose).
I never read what is written on the cable (except CAT5 or so) ;)

bye,
h.
