computer won't recognize hard drive

I recently installed some RAM that turned out to be faulty, and after the computer crashed one time, it gave me a message that it did not recognize my 2nd internal hard drive as a supported volume. I have since replaced the faulty RAM, but the computer will not read the 2nd internal drive, or a firewire hard drive, or a data cd(although it does recognize audio cds). The disk utility seems to recognize the hard drives and how many partitions they have, but it successfully verifies and repairs them without any result, and also doesn't display the correct names of the partitions. When I start up from the installer disc that came with my computer it recognizes the drives, so I think it must be a software problem of some sort, but I can't understand why it began when the computer crashed. Is their something I should reinstall, or any other advice on fixing the problem? Thanks
