When burning a CD on an iBook (model titanium) using Toast, I have no problems. CD's can be written to be used on Mac and Windows computers.
When I burn CD's using the Mac software, it MAY be problematic to read it on older PowerMacs (Desktop G3, 8600, 8500, 7600).

What is wrong? Several people explained they recognized the idea, but Apple "knows nothing".

John

Are you ruling out that it may be the CD's
themselves (specific brand/quality) that
cannot be read by the cd drives on these
older machines?

I could understand if the Macs in question were old enough to have 2x CD-ROMs, but the ones you mention all had at least 4x drives, with some having much faster drives than that. I'm with fieraci on this one - sounds like you might be using cheap CD-R media. Try another brand, or try recording at a lower speed.

No, it's not the CD-brand. I tried several brands (Sony, Imation, and the CD's from the Apple package), all with the same results.
Furthermore, I spoke to a PowerBook G4 user who had the same problem.
The Apple software does not allow me to record at lower speeds (or am I wrong here)?

I think the problems have something to do with the format Apple uses which is a combined ISO/Mac format. It might be that MacOS 8.6 and older systems cannot read this format properly.
Am I wrong here?

Something else I forgot:
When inserting a problem-disk in an older Mac (MacOS 8.6) I get a message that "Sharing could not be started". This does not occur when the CD was burned with Toast.

All the Apple software I've ever used for burning CDs allowed me to burn at whatever speed I chose, from 1x up to the maximum supported by the burner. Furthermore, I've burned CDs on my PB G4 that have worked just fine in Macs older than the 8500. A strange problem indeed.

What Apple software are you using, and what version of it?

Apple Burner (latest version according to
Apple).
I think I'll solve it by buying a version of
Toast; maybe with an external non-Apple
DVD-writer.

Thanks anyway,
