My computer crashes often and when it comes back up the date is always set at 1/1/1904. Does this indicate a problem with the interal battery? Any suggestions?

Could be your battery. Give the Pram a zap, then reset the date. Try to use Micromat's TechToolLite. It's a free download and it's better for rebuilding the desktop and clearing parameter memory.
To reduce crashes, you may want to turn off extensions that you're not using. Go into Extensions Manager under the Apple Menu. Go through the list and check off unwanted extensions. Note, if you don't know what an extension does you should leave it on.

How are you restarting it? Do you push the reset button, or hold down the power button? If the former, stop doing it and hold down the power button to restart instead.
